Random and rare. The internet’s a bizarre place. There are more connection points than people. So for what it’s worth, this is how I arrived at this particular point:
– Came home late from a party (rare).
– Watched DVR of Tiger’s game but when they were losing 5-2, I super-fast-forwarded hoping for a closer score quick fix — but overshot the runway and landed on Fox 2 News (rare–a game on Fox 2)
– Watched a segment about a guy who was stabbed to death in the parking lot of Roma Hall in Garden City on Cherry Hill.
– Remembered that my Little League awards banquets were held at Roma Hall and I couldn’t believe something like that could happen at the place I’d been for a few Little League events.
– But then I remembered that the banquet hall was in Livonia on Schoolcraft (remembered this because they were building I-696 during this era (circa 1973-75) and for some reason that had always stuck with me–the vision of all those cranes and things down in that giant ditch.
– So I searched “Roma Hall Livonia” but there’s not much there.
– Then I remembered something else–that race track.
– So I searched DRC, and hit your blog.
– Don’t usually read blogs but the Ray Manzarek headline caught my eye. You’re correct, he was/is underrated. Especially given the fact he also played all those base lines on his keyboard.
– So I read a bit more. (rarer)
– We have similar beliefs in a lot of things and not-so-similar beliefs in others.
– For example: politics. I bet you had tons to say during the eight long years of George W. Bush (aka Worst President Ever). And BTW, if pure evil walks the earth, it’s Dick Cheney.
– And Westboro Baptist? How F’ed up is that? Even Dick Cheney would agree. (Okay, that’s a stretch)
– But then there’s the blues. I’m fairly open minded and I dig a ton of music varieties, but a just can’t get into blues music. The closest I’ve come is Jimi and maybe the Stones. But beyond that I just can’t jump in. And my best friend is drummer for “Code Blue” — a blues band that from what I hear is very good (They just played a gig downtown at the Music Hall.)
– As far as horse racing, not a big fan, but every time I’ve been to a track I’ve had a riot. You are certainly passionate about that sport.
So here I am commenting on your blog (random).
– It’s likely we’ll never become close friends but if in some crazy, bizarro universe that happened, I certainly wouldn’t cross you. Mainly because that wouldn’t be cool…
So, do you remember a Roma Hall being located just east of the race track?
-jkm clarkston
Of course, I worked at DRC from 76′ until the last horse left the grounds in 98′. Being Italian, when very young went to a lot of weddings at the one on the east side where I grew up. Sadly it is also where we had the luncheon for my grandma’s funeral in 71′.
I have a blog on DRC under the horse racing tab called Reminiscing Detroit Race Course. After you read it you’ll understand why such passion.
Haven’t updated these categories in about 4-5 months. Have posted a ton more music and other subjects matters for all categories. Got to do that soon. Glad you stumbled on to blog. Hope you enjoy more.
