Tuesday Time Machine ~ 1961 ~ Herbie Mann at the Village Gate ~ “Comin’ Home Baby”.

Herbie Mann and Ben Tucker invented Groovy before the word even became popular. And with this Ben Tucker composition I could have listened to the intro bass solo for a year.

All the instruments on the recording both stood out both separately; bass, flute, vibes, percussion yet also blended together splendidly for that ultimate jazz sound. The whole album only consisted of three songs. But this is the one that would go on to ring in our ears and minds timelessly. It was musical perfection.

Recorded & Released in 1961 – Greenwich Village, New York at the Village Gate.

Herbie Mann – flute
Ben Tucker – solo bass, double base
Ahmad Abdul-Malik – additional bass
Hagood Hardy – vibraharp
Ray Mantilla – conga and percussion
Chief Bey – African drum and percussion
Rudy Collins – drums

1930-2003 – Jamming in Heaven

81 and going strong

  1. We lost Ben today, I’m so sorry to report. Rest easy, Sir. And play on with abandon! My sincerest condolences are with his wife Gloria and all who knew and loved him. Savannah will not be the same.
