This was a 1967 hit by four teens out of Lansing, Mi. The song itself started out as an instrumental written by hammond organist Kerry Nicholoff but when the band’s guitarist Danny Hernandez broke up with his girlfriend he wrote some lyrics befitting the music.
Originally released by local labels Spirit and Fenton, the song soon hit the Detroit air waves at WKNR & CLKW. The group won second in a Hullabaloo Teen Club Battle Of the Bands and part of the prize sort to speak was a contract with Motown. So now the record was released by Gordy’s label. But as with many artists who came and went with Gordy and got there by winning something, reminding me of the same exact story of Carolyn Crawford when it sadly really meant in the end losing out.
Gordy never promoted the song, the band and any of the follow ups which included one in-which Aretha Franklin had written.
The Ones “You Haven’t Seen My Love” was the first independent record master ever to be purchased by Motown Records and the song should have hit number 1 on Billboard.
It certainly was a #1 hit here in Michigan and across the river in Canada and is more worthy of just a mention.
Danny Hernandez died in 2000 but the rest Kevin & Kerry Nicholoff and Mark Boomershine all still live in the Lansing area.
The pictures depicted on the video were members after the Nicholoff brothers and Boomershine left the group in 1969.
