Mellow Monday ~ Here’s To Life ~ Shirley Horn

Written by:
Lyrics – Phyllis Molinary
Muse Composed – Artie Butler
And what an absolutely beautiful arrangement by Johnny Mandel.

A fabulous song sung by a fabulous singer.

And although a lot of the lyrics haven’t applied to my personal life of having had my share and satisfied. It’s been more down times than up. But I am hoping some day soon that will all finally change.

But the lyrics of ” I still believe in chasing dreams and placing bets
And I have learned that all you give is all you get. So give it all you’ve got ” definitely do apply.

The orchestration on this song was a work of art by Mandel. He won a Grammy Award for this album, Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s)

Sadly this generation will never know what music really is. The perfect timing, phrasing, musical adaptation and the singer’s ability to produce and deliver the songs message with ever so smooth precision.

” Here’s To Life ” defines it all.

Shirley Horn’s career spanned over a 45 year period. She along with having a beautiful voice was also a virtuoso of the piano and had played and sang with the very best of Jazz.

She had been battling breast cancer and diabetes when she died from complications of a massive stroke at aged 71 in Oct. of 2005.

No complaints and no regrets
I still believe in chasing dreams and placing bets
And I have learned that all you give is all you get
So give it all you’ve got

I had my share, I drank my fill
And even though I’m satisfied, I’m hungry still
To see what’s down another road, beyond a hill
And do it all again

So here’s to life
And every joy it brings
Here’s to life
To dreamers and their dreams

Funny how the time just flies
How love can go from warm hellos to sad goodbyes
And leave you with the memories you’ve memorized
To keep your winters warm

But there’s no yes in yesterday
And who knows what tomorrow brings, or takes away
As long as I’m still in the game, I want to play
For laughs, for life, for love

So here’s to life
And every joy it brings
Here’s to life
To dreamers and their dreams
May all your storms be weathered
And all that’s good get better

Here’s to life
Here’s to love
And here’s to you

Many other artists went on to record their renditions of this song including, Eartha Kitt, Joe Williams, Barbara Streisand and our own Motown’s Mary Wilson. Her version is below.

And she is still ” SUPREME “.

So let this be a Mellow ” Motown ” Monday as well.
