The most influential psychedelic guitarists died two days before his 70th birthday. He was the screaming guitar of Big Brother and the Holding Company. And made the Muse behind Janis Joplin that much more richer. And with one more musician from my youth gone once again, makes me realize how much older I am. The Muse though forever Young.

In this photo made Jan. 25, 2007, James Gurley, the brilliant lead guitarist for Big Brother and the Holding Company, the psychedelic rock band that propelled Janis Joplin to fame, is seen with his painting titled “Self Portrait.” Surviving members of Big Brother said Gurley died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, in a Palm Springs hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was 69.
